Welcome to an open seminar on the Aalto University's new collaboration with EIT Climate KIC which is the Europe’s largest public-private innovation partnership focused on climate change, consisting of dynamic companies, the best academic institutions and the public sector.
Aalto University will engage activities in all existing pillars: education, innovation and entrepreneurship. The Aalto activities are in two focus themes which are sustainable cities and built environment and bio-economy.
Climate-KIC is one of three Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) created in 2010 by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The EIT is an EU body whose mission is to create sustainable growth. We support this mission by addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation.
We integrate education, entrepreneurship and innovation resulting in connected, creative transformation of knowledge and ideas into economically viable products or services that help to mitigate climate change.

The Climate-KIC leads, representative of Climate-KIC Nordic and Aalto University staff will be available for discussions until 16:00. Aalto leads will be available for discussions until 14:30.
Venture Competition Nordic Finals
In 2015, Climate-KIC organises the fifth edition of their Venture Competition. The competition will see Climate-KIC start-ups, selected for the major impact they have on climate change, compete for the title of Europe’s Best Cleantech Start-up 2015. The Nordic finals are organised in the Aalto Climate KIC launch. The European finals, will be held in Birmingham 28-30 October, and the best two teams from Nordic finals will neter and compete against teams from around Europe.
Desert Control, Norway
The project turns desert land into fertile soil in seven hours with a proven, simple, low-cost method. Thereby increasing the value of land a factor 10 and reducing water consumption for growing crops to a third.
Heliac, Denmark
The project reduces the cost of concentrated solar power plants by 80-90%. Thereby getting cost of energy lower than coal. Technology is proven. Production is highly scalable. First customer has signed a deal.
Nanomaji, Finland
Project has a technology and a business model that makes it possible to provide clean drinking water to 700 million poor people in a profitable way. Think customer lock-in and Nespresso.
One Earth Design, Norway
Project sells an up-market solar-cooker with an energy storage unit developed by team members from Harvard, MIT and NTNU. The energy storage unit allows for use of solar power for cooking after the sun has set. When production is scaled and costs are down the storage unit can be sold in millions.
Rencat, Denmark
Eliminates the need for precious metals as catalysts in fuel cells. Reducing average cost of catalysts per fuel cell system from around €2,000 to €0.5. First market is replacement of diesel gensets providing power for mobile masts in off-grid/poor-grid areas. MoU signed with mobile operator with 50 million subscribers.
RePack, Finland
Turns packaging into a profitable business for both webshops and consumers (and for RePack itself) with a scalable, innovative business model that eliminates the need for disposable packaging. Business model and traction already proven.
