The Internet has grown immensely in during the last decade. A large part of this growth comes from mobile broadband networks. This has put a strain on the whole Internet. The currently widely used Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) address space is practically depleted. This puts the further growth of the mobile networks and the whole Internet at risk
This dissertation describes how the address exhaustion can be solved using a new Internet Protocol – the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). This includes the history of IPv6 in mobile networks, the drivers for it and also the current status of deployment.
