Internet of Things and other new paradigms necessitate wirelessly connected devices, sensors and actuators. Wireless connection is commonly established with active radio transceivers powered by a battery, but it can also be realized passively such that the remote device harvests the energy needed from the elec-tromagnetic signal. One such passive connection method, namely intermodula-tion communication principle has been developed further in this dissertation. It is shown in this dissertation how such a passive device can be made identifiable and how the intermodulation communication principle can be made compliant with the current frequency regulations. It has further been demonstrated how the intermodulation communication principle can be used to wirelessly read out a generic sensor element, such as a MEMS sensors, and how the passive device is designed for given requirements. A specific reader device for these passive sen-sors is developed with the associated signal processing algorithms. After these advancements, the intermodulation communication principle offers many bene-fits over other passive communication technologies, including relatively long read-out distance of even 20 m and the possibility to utilize a relatively general sensor element. These sensors could be realized in a highly integrated fabrication process and they could be feasible in many applications where the remote device cannot be equipped with a battery.
