Electrical machines are used to run industrial processes that require very high reliability. The dissertation deals with the modelling and characterization of faults in cage induction motors. Both analytical and numerical models are used. The analytical models are based on permeance-function theory and the numerical ones on finite element analysis. The faults studied are broken rotor bars, inter-turn short circuits and dynamic eccentricity of the rotor.
The magnetic saturation of the iron core and skewing of rotor bars have a strong influence on the harmonic components of stator current which are often used as indicators of faults. If these effects are not taken properly into account, an errone-ous diagnosis may follow. Multidimensional spectral analysis is recommended to overcome these problems. The modelling methods are validated by comparison with measured results from faulted electrical machines.
