Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly applied for radiation therapy treatment planning. A novel technique transforms the intensity values of a pelvic MR image into tissue electron density information. The introduced technique enables relying solely on MRI throughout the radiation therapy treatment planning workflow for prostate cancer patients.

The radiation therapy treatment planning workflow becomes more efficient by omit-ting computed tomography (CT imaging) from the process. The presented MRI-based workflow: 1) enables precise target delineation process, 2) saves hospital resources, and 3) reduces healthy tissue exposure to ionizing radiation.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in Finland. Over 5000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013. The number of cancer diagnoses is increasing while population is getting older. It is challenging to enable the best pos-sible treatment for the patients without imposing impossible requirements to the hospital resources. Development of technology and techniques is essential to im-prove accuracy and efficiency of treatment and clinical procedures.
